Armed intruders with a shotgun and pistol have terrorised staff at a hotel during a robbery in Sydney’s southwest.

At about 1.02am on Tuesday, officers from Burwood Police Area Command responded to reports of an armed robbery at a hotel on the corner of Canterbury Road and Tincombe Street, Canterbury.

Police were informed that two men wearing dark clothing, face coverings and gloves – one armed with a shotgun and the other with a pistol - entered the hotel and threatened staff and patrons.

An amount of cash was stolen from the premises before the men fled the scene on foot in an easterly direction.

During the incident, a 38-year-old security guard suffered minor injuries.

Officers established a crime scene that was examined by specialist police.

Inquiries have established that shortly before the incident a vehicle was seen to drive the wrong way down Tincombe Street before stopping at Minter Street.

As investigations continue, detectives are urging anyone who may have information about the matter – or were in the area at the time with any available dashcam/mobile phone footage – to contact Burwood Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
