A man has died following a serious assault on a suburban street on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales early Thursday morning, sparking a police investigation and leaving residents in disbelief.

Emergency services were called to Kurrajong Street, Coffs Harbour, after reports of an attack about 4.15am.

First responders and Coffs/Clarence Police District officers arrived to find a 41-year-old man with critical injuries to his upper body.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus where he later died.

Police have established a crime scene and are investigating the man’s death, according to a NSW Police statement. Forensics officers were still at Kurrajong Street investigating about 3pm on Thursday.

Neighbours told The Daily Telegraph they were in disbelief an attack of this nature could happen in their usually quiet coastal neighbourhood. One resident told the publication they heard “shouting” and “screaming” before seeing a person run into a nearby children’s park.

“I’ve lived in this street 61 years and I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s a tragedy,” another resident, who did not want to be named, told The Daily Telegraph.

The attack comes only five months after a 36-year-old man was charged with the alleged murder of surfer Kye Schaefer, who was allegedly stabbed multiple times in a car park at Coffs Harbour after a morning surf on May 2.

Homicide police described the attack on the 22-year-old man as random, unprovoked and savage.

No charges have been laid and NSW Police are urging anyone with anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
