A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital after their bike collided with an ambulance in the NSW Southern Highlands region.

About 10am on Friday the ambulance and bicycle crashed at the intersection of Wildes Meadow Rd and Sheepwash Rd, Avoca, about 13km west of Robertson.

A man, aged in his 40s, was treated by paramedics at the scene.

He was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A crime scene was established and an investigation has been launched.

Sheepwash Rd is closed between the Illawarra Highway and Nowra Rd, Avoca and local traffic diversions are in place.
