Deaths of man and woman found in Maribyrnong River not linked, police say

The deaths of a man and woman whose bodies were found in the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne on Sunday are not believed to be linked, police have revealed.

The bodies were found in the river at Flemington and Footscray by two separate members of the public about 90 minutes apart.

On Monday police confirmed they were treating the death of the woman as suspicious, and that homicide squad detectives were investigating.

“We are still in the process of speaking to next of kin,” police said.

They said at this stage the woman’s death was not linked to the death of a man also found in the river.

Police said his death is not believed to be suspicious.

The man has not yet been identified.

On Monday afternoon police were seen pulling a motorbike out of the river.

7NEWS understands at this stage the bike is not related to the woman’s death.

A member of the public discovered the man’s body in the water at Footscray about 9am.

About an hour and a half later, a fisherman came across the woman’s body lying on rocks on the riverbank at Flemington.

Anyone with information, including dashcam footage or CCTV, has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
