The grieving family of a teenager killed on a notorious road in Sydney’s west are calling for urgent change, after it was revealed concerns were raised over the road’s safety months before their loved one’s death.

Liam Carr, 19, was killed when his motorbike crashed with a turning van on a notorious intersection on Richmond Rd in Berkshire Park, only three days before Christmas in 2022.

Adding to their grief, the young bricklayer’s family learnt there had been a campaign, launched by a Penrith City Councillor, demanding state government carry out urgent safety upgrades only four months before Liam’s death.

“It’s a death trap for anyone who travels on that road,” Liam’s mother, Amanda McLaghlan told 7NEWS.

“It’s unfathomable to know that he could still be here if someone listened,”

McLaghlan is now joining the fight for safety upgrades, calling for traffic lights or a roundabout to be installed.

“Something needs to be put there, otherwise other families will go through what we’re going through right now,” she said.

The NSW government confirmed on Tuesday that it was aware of the dangerous intersection, and that funding has been approved to make the road safer.

The safety upgrades have been marked as a priority, however, there has been no clear date as to when work will begin.

“There are lots of collisions, at least once per month there’s a serious accident,” Councillor Glenn Gardiner said.

“And once every couple of years there’s a fatality, unfortunately.

“I worry about all people driving around the area.”
