Gerringong: Tragedy as 14-year-old boy drowns at unpatrolled lagoon in NSW

Tragedy has struck a group of teenagers swimming at an unpatrolled lagoon after a 14-year-old boy drowned in Gerringong.

The teenager was swimming on Wednesday when emergency services were called to the Werri Lagoon at about 5pm, responding to reports three people were in trouble.

Two teenage boys – aged 16 and 18 – made their own way to safety with a third brought to shore by a lifeguard, however the 14-year-old boy was unable to be revived.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District have commenced an inquiry.

Police have been told that part of the lagoon is not patrolled.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
