Karen Webb: NSW Police Commissioner finishes duties early, Peter Thurtell to become acting top cop from Friday

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb is reportedly taking leave immediately, stepping aside on Friday, handing over to her current Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell, who will be thrust into an acting role.
Ms Webb announced her resignation on May 7, flagging that she would wrap up with the force in September.
However, now in June, Ms Webb is reportedly taking leave, stepping aside as top cop in NSW, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Taking over from former NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller, Ms Webb was the State’s first female commissioner.
Ms Webb said being the “first female police commissioner has been her greatest honour”.
When she announced her shock resignation, Ms Webb recommended that her deputy be given the top job.
“I have recommended to the Government that Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell act in my role,” Ms Webb said when she announced her resignation.
“I knew when the time was right I would know, and I wanted to give the State Government time to recruit and appoint a new Commissioner going into an election period in less than two years’ time,” she said.
