A 20-year-old man has been charged with five offences including wounding a police officer executing his duty.

He is also charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, having custody of knife in public place and assaulting a police officer in execution of their duty.

He has been refused bail to appear in Blacktown Local Court on Friday.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood said police allege the 20-year-old stabbed the officer twice, once in the back and once in the chest.

“The conduct is abhorrent ... there are no other words for it,” Wood said.

“Sometimes you think you’ve seen it all ... but for a young police officer to be out at 1am looking after the community doing his job ... and then suddenly he’s in hospital with significant stab wounds, it’s beyond belief.”

During the arrest, police allegedly seized multiple weapons including a machete.

Woods said the situation could have been “much worse”.

“But the officer is in good spirits ... he wants to go back to work which again is a testament to his character,” he said.

Two other men, aged 18 and 21, were also arrested as investigations into the incident continue.

The teen was charged with custody of knife in public place, stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (personal), armed with intent commit indicatable offence and affray.

He was refused bail to appear before Blacktown Local Court on Friday.

Police are hoping to speak with a further two men who are believed to have been involved in the brawl.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
