A man aged in his 40s has died in a house fire on the NSW Central Coast.

More than 30 firefighters were called to battle the blaze at Mercator Pde, in the canal suburb of St Huberts Island, about 5.40am on Tuesday.

Emergency crews arrived to find the home engulfed by flames and faced “extreme fire activity, with the wind pushing the blaze throughout the home”, Fire and Rescue NSW said.

Two people inside managed to escape after being alerted to the fire by the smoke alarm.

They were taken to hospital for treatment.

It took just under two hours for the blaze to be extinguished.

Authorities were then able to search the home and found the body of a man.

“He is yet to be formally identified; however, is believed to be a man aged in his 40s,” police said.

Fire investigators and police remain at the destroyed home as they work to determine how the fire started.

Fire and Rescue has urged the community to be extra vigilant and ensure households have working smoke alarms and a home escape plan.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
