A group of intruders has stormed a rural property in NSW and shot a man twice while terrorising the other female occupants.

An investigation is underway after the 46-year-old man was shot in the abdomen on Friday morning at a property 100km northwest of Griffith.

Officers attached to Murrumbidgee police district were called to the home on Burns Street, Hillston, after the shooting at about 2.30am.

Police have been told the man and two women, aged 31 and 56, were in the home when three people entered, one armed with a firearm.

The resident was shot twice before the home invaders left thr scene.

The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Griffith Hospital. He has now been airlifted to a major metropolitan hospital.

He is described as being in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Inquiries are now underway by detectives attached to Murrumbidgee local command.
