A man is in a critical condition after a horrific crash in Sydney’s west that left a car split in half.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was driving along Pike St in Rydalmere when he crashed into a pole about 10.35am on Sunday.

NSW Police said the man hit the pole so hard his car “split in half”.

He was trapped inside the wreck before Fire & Rescue NSW were able to free him a short time later.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

Pike St was closed in both directions and is expected to remain a crime scene for a considerable amount of time, police said.

Motorists are area urged to avoid the area.
