Man killed as truck falls into river attempting to board ferry near Grafton

A man died when his truck crashed into a river as he was attempting to drive it on to a ferry in northern NSW on Thursday morning.

The driver, believed to be in his 50s, was attempting to manoeuvre his truck onto a transport ferry on the Clarence River at Lawrence, north of Grafton, about 10am when it fell into the water.

Members of the public scrambled in a bid to rescue the driver, pulling him from the truck and performing CPR until paramedics arrived, however, he was declared dead at the scene.

The driver is yet to be formally identified.

“The Bluff Point Ferry is closed in both directions,” NSW Police said.

“Motorists can consider using Big River Way and Lawrence Road to cross the Clarence River via Grafton.”

Boat traffic is also urged to avoid the area.

Investigations into what caused the incident are ongoing, police said.

Safe Work NSW has been contacted for comment.
