It was recorded at a depth of 3km.

The tremor was felt up to about 80km from the epicentre, with reports coming from as far as the North Shore, Penrith and Hornsby, as well as Wollongong on the South Coast.

CCTV from a home in Menangle Park captured the moment the property began to shake.

“So automatically Charlie, my black Labrador, got up and he kind of looked at me and I kind of looked at him to think, oh, what was that? And I went, oh my God, it was an earthquake,” resident Emma Brown told 7NEWS.

Another resident told 7NEWS they felt a powerful jolt at their home in Menangle.

“Wow we just had a massive bang and crack in Menangle — whole house shook and dogs took off barking madly. Even horses took off!” they said.

Geoscience Australia said minor aftershocks could follow, but a larger earthquake was considered unlikely.

“We can’t forecast earthquakes. So it is possible there could be a bigger one coming. In Australia’s context, it’s probably unlikely,” seismologist Michelle Salmon said.
