A man is under police guard in hospital after he was shot during a brutal exchange with two other people in a NSW park.

Police were called to Wilks Park in North Wagga Wagga at 12.30pm on Thursday after reports of a shooting.

Officers on the scene were told a 42-year-old man had allegedly been stabbed with a pair of scissors by a 33-year-old man before the 33-year-old was shot by a third man who left the scene.

Police say the man who was shot was found in the Murrumbidgee River, a short distance from the park, but he refused to come out and instead swam to an island and climbed a tree.

He was arrested about 2am on Friday and taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.

The 42-year-old man, who had left the scene of the attack before police arrived, later presented himself at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, suffering a wound to his neck.

He was treated and released on Friday morning.

Police have found a weapon they believe was used in the attack and are still looking for a third man believed to be involved.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage is urged to call Riverina police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
