A Northern NSW camping trip ended in tragedy, with a man charged over an alleged axe attack that left a 33-year-old dead.

A camping trip in Northern NSW has ended in tragedy, with a man charged with murder following the alleged axe attack that left a 33-year-old man dead.
Emergency services were called to Thora, about 25km northwest of Bellingen, shortly after midnight on Monday, where NSW Ambulance paramedics found the man suffering critical head injuries. He could not be revived.
Police were told the man had allegedly been struck with an axe about 10.30pm on Sunday while camping with two friends at a campground off Point Lookout Road in Ebor, roughly 80km east of Armidale.

By continuing you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy.A 25-year-old woman, understood to be a friend, allegedly drove the injured man from Ebor to Thora in a desperate bid to seek help. She told officers she had also been assaulted during the incident and was treated for bruising to her neck.
Officers established a crime scene at the campground and, with assistance from the Homicide Squad, launched an investigation.


Following inquiries, a 26-year-old man was arrested on Waterfall Way at Ebor about 11.30am on Monday.
The man, from Thora, was taken to Armidale Police Station and charged with murder, intentionally choking a person with recklessness, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was refused bail and is due to appear in Bail Division on Tuesday.
