Police have a man in custody after a woman died following a horrific alleged domestic violence incident in Sydney last weekend.

The woman sustained serious injuries during the alleged assault inside a Redfern property, and after being rushed to hospital police were notified that the woman had died in hospital at around 5.40pm on Monday.

Just after 4.30pm on Saturday, emergency services were called to the apartment on Morehead Street, Redfern, following reports of an alleged domestic violence incident.

Officers found a 47-year-old woman with major head injuries inside the unit and called for paramedic assistance.

She was treated by the NSW Ambulance service before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Police arrested a 30-year-old man at the scene and he was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to person with intent (Domestic violence).

The man and woman are believed to be known to each other and he remains in custody to appear before the court.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
