Unit block in Sydney's west torched in suspected arson attack

A raging fire has gutted nine apartments in a unit complex at Whalan in Western Sydney on Tuesday night.

Residents fled as firefighters rushed to the blaze on Halinda St about 9.50pm.

NSW Police were the first emergency responders to arrive at the scene, and promptly evacuated the building.

Sunrise understands four firefighters inside the burning block of flats had part of the roof collapse on top of them as they tried to extinguish the blaze.

Paramedics at the scene treated a number of people, but no one was hospitalised.

The fire is being treated as supicious, NSW Police said.

Anyone with information about the suspected arson, or anyone with dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area at the time, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
