A man in his 20s is dead and another is in a critical condition after being pulled from the surf in the Port Stephens area.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after two swimmers were reported in distress at Zenith Beach in Shoal Bay.

The two men were dragged from the water by friends.

Members of the public and police officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but one of the men could not be revived and died.

The other man is still being treated at the scene.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the second man was in a critical condition.

They are yet to be formally identified but both men are believed to be in their 20s.
