Springfield: Man shot dead by police after six-hour stand off on NSW Central Coast

A man has been shot dead by police following a six-hour stand-off on the NSW Central Coast.
Officers were called to a home on Wells Street in Springfield just before 3.30pm on Wednesday, 7 January, to conduct a welfare check on a 49-year-old resident.
When officers attempted to speak to the man, he “armed himself with a screwdriver and other sharp objects”, NSW Police said on Thursday.

Around 9.25pm, the man attempted to burn an officer by lighting an aerosol can.
Tactical officers then entered the home, where the man, armed with a sharp object, stabbed an officer multiple times.
“Police officers discharged their firearms, and the man was fatally shot,” NSW Police said in a statement.
The officer sustained minor injuries.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene, but he died shortly after.
A critical incident investigation will be led by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. The incident will also be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
