A garbage truck driver has leapt into action after realising the back of his vehicle had caught fire in Sydney's south-west.

A garbage truck driver has been forced to dump a load of rubbish after it burst into flames on a busy Sydney street.

The truck’s contents caught fire, forcing the driver to leap into action to get rid of his load in Sydney’s southwest.

Firefighters were called to the burning truck in Leppington early on Wednesday morning.

A rechargeable lithium-ion battery was thought to be the cause of the blaze.

The truck’s contents were dumped on the road and the fire was brought under control quickly.

According to Channel 7’s Sunrise, it is the fifth fire of its kind this month.
