The tunnel was forced to close in both directions after the blaze erupted about 8.04am, according to Live Traffic NSW.
“Sydney Harbour Tunnel is closed in both directions at North Sydney due to a car fire.,” it said in a post on X.

By continuing you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy.According to NSW Fire and Rescue, the vehicle became engulfed in flames as it was travelling through the southbound side of the tunnel, News24 reports.
Motorists have been urged to follow directions from emergency crews at the scene and allow for extra travel time.
“Light vehicles can use Sydney Harbour Bridge and Cahill Expressway,” Live Traffic NSW said.
“Heavy vehicles must use an alternative route.”
In an update at 9.20am, Live Traffic NSW said the northbound lane had been reopened.
Crews were able to clear the southbound lane before it was reopened at about 9.45am.
Motorists are have been warned to exercise caution as traffic is still heavy in the area.
