Panic has gripped Sydney’s southwest on Friday morning after gunmen opened fire in a Gregory Hills car park, sending workers and shoppers scrambling for cover.

Emergency services rushed to the complex near World Gym and the Service NSW centre on Lasso Road after reports of multiple rounds being fired shortly after 8.30am.

Witnesses told the Daily Telegraph two masked offenders unleashed up to nine shots before fleeing the scene on foot.

“I saw two people with balaclavas on their heads with handguns. They were running towards Service NSW and fired about six to eight shots,” a witness said.

“Pretty shocked at the start. I didn’t really know what it was. I thought it was firecrackers at the start, and then I actually saw the people coming. And I was like, ‘Okay, so that’s gunfire’. So I kind of yelled to the people in store to just get inside and hide.”

Frightened workers barricaded themselves in back rooms of nearby businesses as police established a large exclusion zone around the car park.

Officers urged the public to stay clear while they interviewed witnesses and scoured the area for evidence.

Police have confirmed an operation is underway but said no injuries have been reported.

“A police operation is currently underway in Gregory Hills following reports of shots fired. There is a large police presence in the area,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

A large section of the carpark remains taped off as investigations continue into the whereabouts of those responsible.
