Commuters are experiencing delays of up to an hour as urgent signal works disrupt several networks around Sydney.

Two of the nation’s biggest train stations, Town Hall and Central, are undergoing urgent signal repairs that have thrown the Monday morning commute into chaos for thousands of travellers.

The signal problems occurred on Sunday night with a train failure at Circular Quay on Monday morning, compounding the issues.

The T2, T3 and T8 lines out of the city to Leppington, the Inner West, Liverpool, Airport and Southern lines are all now experiencing delays of at least an hour.

“Trains continue to run however there may be larger than normal gaps between services, trains may stop on platforms for longer than usual and train stopping patterns may change,” Transport NSW said.

“Passengers should also listen to announcements and check information displays for service updates.”

Sydney Trains says the works to repair all the issues has been completed but significant delays expected to continue throughout the morning.

“One issue was ballast was stuck under one of the signal arms,” Transport for NSW Secretary Josh Murray told 2GB.

“Those repairs have all been completed now and we are working to get our services back up over 90 per cent on time.”
