A woman had to be rescued after impaling her arm on a school fence in Sydney’s northwest.

Paramedics, Fire Rescue NSW and police were called to Riverstone High School on Saturday morning.

On arrival, they discovered a woman “dangling by her left arm” on the fence of the school, NSW Ambulance inspector Nathan Sheraton said.

Tradies nearby stepped in to help, offering up a ladder for the woman, aged in her 30s, to stand on to help relieve the pressure.

Sheraton said the woman was conscious and alert but in a lot of pain.

“It’s evident that the fence tore some of the flesh which caused significant pain to her,” he said.

Emergency services had to cut the fence, leaving some embedded in her arm as she was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Sheraton said she suffered a “significant wound to the inside of her left upper arm” and was hospitalised in a serious but stable condition.

7NEWS understands the woman climbed the fence to retrieve her daughter’s phone which had been left at the school.

Nearby neighbour Katelynn Campbell said the scene was “crazy” and that she had never seen so many emergency services crews.

“I’ve never seen nothing like it in my life,” she said.

Campbell described the woman’s actions as “insane”.

“She shouldn’t be entering school grounds, her daughter could have waited until Monday to retrieve the phone, instead she’s put her own life at stake.”

Sheraton issued a warning to people considering jumping over school fences in order to retrieve items, saying there were much easier, and safer, solutions.

“If you ever want to enter a school there’s always sign boards on the school fence with the number of the security personnel,” he said.

“Give them a call, they’ll come out and help you, don’t climb the fence, it’s dangerous.”
