A NSW man has been arrested and charged after allegedly paying for and viewing the live sexual abuse of children overseas.

Detectives from the Sex Crimes Squad took the 69-year-old Tamworth man into custody on Monday morning as part of an ongoing investigation.

He faces nine charges, including three counts of using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material, using a carriage service to make child abuse material available, and three counts of possessing child abuse material.

Police allege the man paid to access live child abuse streams from the Philippines.

An investigation began looking into his activities in July a referral from the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, following suspected purchases made overseas.

During a search of his home, officers allegedly found electronic devices containing child abuse files.

The man has been refused bail and is due to front court on Tuesday.

Police say the investigation into online child exploitation is ongoing.
