Traffic chaos as M1 at Berowra closed after rescue services struggle to free trapped driver

Police and rescue services have struggled to free a trapped driver after a serious incident on a major highway.

The driver was eventually freed from the wreckage of the multi-car accident and has been rushed to hospitals with critical injuries.

Traffic has been banking up and diversions are in place as the scene on the M1 Pacific Highway near Berowra north of Sydney.

The incident occurred around 4.30am and has thrown morning commuters into a traffic snarl that will likely last for most of the morning.

Major incident traffic co-ordinators have imposed diversions in both directions. Some drivers have been seen performing dangerous ‘u-turns’ to try and avoid being locked in the traffic stoppage.

Callers to morning talkback radio were frustrated and advising people planning to travel on the route to reconsider their plans for the day.
