Melbourne toddler fights for life after being struck by a van while crossing road, Chelsea Heights

A two-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being struck by a van while crossing a suburban street in Melbourne’s south-east.
The boy was riding a small balance bike across Thames Promenade in Chelsea Heights about 9.10pm on Monday when he was hit by a white van at the Mulkarra Drive intersection.
He had been accompanied by his father, who was uninjured.

An off-duty officer was first on the scene, performing CPR before paramedics arrived and rushed the boy to the hospital.

The van driver, a 29-year-old Clyde man, stopped immediately and was arrested at the scene. He was later released pending further inquiries.
Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are working to establish the exact circumstances of the crash.
