Gym-goers have been evacuated from inside a busy shopping mall after part of a ceiling collapsed.

A section of cosmetic ceiling at Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney’s eastern suburbs fell about 9.55am on Wednesday, triggering an automatic fire alarm and an evacuation.

The collapse occurred inside the Virgin Active gym, where witnesses reported seeing “black water” dripping from above.

A building service technician told The Daily Telegraph the leak originated from a spa on a second level.

Fire and Rescue NSW said there was no structural collapse, saying the incident was caused by a broken water pipe.

“It’s the false ceiling or the cosmetic ceiling, the light panels that just cover the structure and the services such as water pipes, electricity, air conditioning ducts,” FWNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.

“So to speak, it’s not a roof or ceiling collapse.”

He said the part that fell was the light panels used to cover services such as water pipes, electricity and air conditioning ducts.

No injuries were reported. The gym was evacuated, cordoned off and remained closed on Wednesday afternoon.

Dewberry said the situation was under control, with firefighters leaving the scene at 11.14am.
