Man charged after cup of tea allegedly laced with poisonous insecticide in St Andrews, Campbelltown

Police have charged a western Sydney man after he allegedly poisoned a woman known to him with tea.

A man has been charged after allegedly trying to poison a woman with a cup of tea laced with insecticide.

The alarm was raised after a 66-year-old woman became seriously ill after drinking tea, which police will allege was prepared by a man known to her.

A police strike force set up in September to investigate the suspected poisoning arrested the 61-year-old man at a home on Lanark Place in St Andrews at 11.25am on Tuesday.

Police also seized a bottle of an insecticide, which has been sent for forensic examination.

The man has been charged with causing poison etc to be taken with intention to murder (DV), use poison etc to endanger life (DV), and use poison etc to inflict grievous bodily harm (DV).

He has been refused bail and is due to appear in Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday.
