Cup of tea allegedly laced with insecticide as man charged with attempted murder in St Andrews, Campbelltown

Police have charged a western Sydney man after he allegedly poisoned a woman known to him with pesticide.

Investigations by a police strike force have led to the arrest of a man charged with trying to poison a woman with the intent to murder her.

The man will appear in Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday. In September 2024, officers attached to the Campbelltown City police area command established strike force southport.

The strike force commenced the investigation into reports of an alleged poisoning after a 66-year-old woman became seriously ill after drinking tea, which police will allege was prepared by a man known to her.

Following inquiries, police attended a home on Lanark Place, St Andrews, at about 11.25am on Tuesday and arrested a 61-year-old man.

Police have also seized a bottle of an insecticide, which has been sent for forensic examination.

The man was taken to Campbelltown police station where he was charged with causing poison etc to be taken with intention to murder (DV), use poison etc to endanger life (DV), and use poison etc to inflict grievous bodily harm (DV).
