A driver has been seriously injured in a horrific crash that completely destroyed their four-wheel-drive north of Adelaide.

The vehicle was travelling on Mallala Rd, Malalla about 5.30am on Saturday when it veered off the road, and struck a tree.

The driver, who was the only occupant inside the vehicle, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Adelaide.

However his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The Adelaide to Mallala Rd was closed in both directions for two hours but is now open.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Investigations continue.
