Port Stephens: Woman tries to swim away from domestic violence arrest, allegedly threatens cops with syringe

Police have been led on a bizarre chase as they tried to arrest a woman wanted for alleged domestic violence offences in Port Stephens.

A woman will face court after being charged over alleged domestic violence offences and threatening police during her arrest on Friday morning.

At about 2.10 am, police from Port Stephens-Hunter police district were patrolling the Tanilba Bay foreshore area, when they located and attempted to speak with a woman wanted over alleged domestic violence offences.

As police approached, the 27-year-old woman entered the water and attempted to swim away.

A short time later, the woman returned to shore before running to Tanilba Park, where she allegedly threatened police with a syringe.

Following a negotiation by police, the woman was arrested and taken to Maitland police station, where she was charged with three counts of destroying or damaging property (domestic violence), stalking/intimidating and intending fear of physical etc harm (domestic), and use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

She was refused bail to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court on Friday.
