Qantas Project Sunrise takes major step towards record-breaking non-stop flights to London

The flight was unlike any other Qantas has operated, with a crucial test taking place before the next chapter of air travel begins.

A historic non-stop flight has just landed in Melbourne. The Qantas Airbus A350-1000ULR travelled nearly 17,000km from France as part of a Project Sunrise test flight.

Qantas’ bid to launch non-stop flights from Australia to Europe has taken a major step forward, with a specially modified Airbus A350 completing a milestone test flight to Melbourne.

The aircraft touched down on Friday morning after travelling almost 17,000 kilometres from France, marking its first-ever landing on Australian soil as part of the airline’s ambitious Project Sunrise program.

There were no passengers on board. Instead, the jet was fitted out as a flying test lab, carrying five tonnes of equipment and around 1,000 sensors to monitor performance throughout the ultra-long-haul journey. Just nine people were on the flight, including four pilots and five engineers, tasked with collecting critical data.

Qantas Chief Technical Pilot Alex Passerini described the arrival as a significant moment after years of planning.

“Nothing beats seeing a physical aeroplane after a lot of talk and excitement,” he told Sunrise.

While the aircraft looks similar to others in the Qantas fleet, it has undergone key modifications to make ultra-long-haul travel possible. That includes an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank, designed to support future non-stop flights lasting up to 23 hours.

The current test flight is focused on validating those changes before the aircraft officially enters service. Engineers will now analyse how the systems performed across the journey and ensure they meet safety and operational requirements.

The testing is part of the certification process required before the aircraft can be delivered to Qantas and used for commercial flights.

Beyond the aircraft itself, Project Sunrise is also focused on how people will handle the world’s longest flights.

Managing fatigue for pilots and cabin crew has been central to the design, with dedicated rest areas, advanced fatigue monitoring systems and structured recovery periods built into operations.

Passengers are also expected to benefit from improvements aimed at reducing the strain of long-haul travel. The aircraft will feature higher cabin humidity, improved air quality and increased oxygen levels to help limit fatigue and jet lag.

The flight attracted global attention, becoming one of the most closely tracked aircraft in the world as it made its way to Australia.

If the program proceeds as planned, Qantas will eventually operate non-stop services connecting Australia directly with destinations in Europe and North America.

As part of those plans, the airline has also revealed a surprising potential route for its Sydney to London flights — over the North Pole.

Around 20 per cent of services are expected to travel via the northern polar region during certain times of the year, taking advantage of favourable winds and less congested airspace.

The route, expected to launch from October 2027, will be operated by a fleet of Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft.

While it may appear longer on a map, experts say the polar path can actually reduce travel time, with flights expected to take between 19 hours 25 minutes and just under 21 hours.

It would mark a first for an Australian airline operating commercial flights over the northern polar region, introducing new operational challenges including communications limitations and space weather considerations.

Project Sunrise aims to eliminate the need for stopovers on long-haul routes, potentially cutting hours off current journeys and reshaping how Australians travel overseas.
