The mystery of a human skull found in the Gold Coast hinterland has deepened, with police revealing a bizarre new development in the case.

A bushwalker discovered the skull on Saturday near Best Of All Lookout in Springbrook National Park, prompting a major search for any other human remains which might have been in the area.

The searched turned up nothing else of sinister note — but a forensic examination did turn up some interesting detail about the history of the skull

“Following thorough forensic examination, it is believed that a skull discovered on a bush track in Springbrook on January 3 is likely to be a historical museum specimen,” a police spokesperson said on Tuesday.

“Extensive investigations, including searches conducted by police and SES volunteers, have failed to locate any further evidence of remains in the area.

“Initial forensic analysis, including CT imaging, and expert evaluations support the current conclusion.”

Police confirmed no other bones were found.

But the conclusion that the skull was a museum specimen raises even more questions — such as where was it previously displayed, and how did it come to be in a national park.

Police could not say where the skull had come from, or whether it had ever been reported missing or stolen.

The case is now being referred to the coroner to try to work out what happened.
