The bodies of two men who failed to resurface while swimming at a popular waterfall in Queensland have been found.

The men, aged 28 and 29, went missing on Tuesday morning while swimming at Millaa Millaa Falls, south of Cairns.

Paramedics were called as a search and rescue operation began just before 9am on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, about midday two bodies were retrieved,” Inspector Jason Smith said.

Emergency services are still working to contact next of kin, Smith said.

The men were known to each other and visiting the falls with a third man, aged 27, who was not injured.

While initially a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said it appeared the men had jumped off the waterfall, Smith said it appeared the two men had entered from the shore.

“It appears that one man got into difficulty, and then a second man has had to come render him assistance,” Smith said.

“And unfortunately both men perished.”

The waterfall has reopened to the public.
