An armed man who was making threats at a Queensland coastal town has been taken into custody after 18 hours of negotiations with police.

Officers were called to speak with a man armed with a knife at an Urangan property, in Hervey Bay north of Brisbane, at about noon on Monday.

Police arrived to find the man alone making threats and began negotiations.

Six hours later, a Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) was declared by police which introduced an exclusion zone encompassing Boat Harbour Drive, Lavell Street, Hammond Street and Toni Street.

The man was taken into custody at 6.44am on Tuesday.

He was taken to hospital with a non-life threatening injury and is helping police with their investigation.

The emergency declaration for the area has now been revoked.
