A man was hospitalised with a gunshot to his abdomen after being shot by police in the Atherton Tablelands on Sunday.

He was in the bushland on Northey Rd at Tolga when he allegedly “approached” police responding to reports of “a man armed with a bladed object,” Queensland Police said.

“The man was shot once in the abdomen and immediate first aid was provided.”

He was flown to Cairns Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The matter is now under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command, and will be overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
