Members of a public primary school are on alert after being exposed to a confirmed case measles.

The individual, who recently returned from overseas, visited several locations while unknowingly infectious.

Potential exposure sites include Clover Hill State School in Mudgeeraba, Gold Coast, between 8:30am and 3:30pm on October 7.

Two afternoon school bus routes from the school to Austinville on the same day as well as the school bus from Tulipwood Dr, Bonogin, to Austinville.

“Contact tracing has been carried out by Gold Coast Public Health where applicable and appropriate advice provided to the school,” Gold Coast Health said.

People who were at these locations are urged to monitor for symptoms until October 25.

Symptoms of the highly contagious virus include fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes and a red spotty rash.

The incubation period can range from 10 to 18 days after exposure.

Measles is a serious infection that can lead to severe complications, but it is preventable through vaccination.

Two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine provide the best protection.

The MMR vaccine is free for children at 12 and 18 months of age, or earlier if travelling overseas.

It’s also free in Queensland for anyone born during or since 1966 who has not yet had two doses.

Authorities are urging anyone with symptoms to stay home and call their GP or 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) before visiting a clinic to help stop the spread.
