A man is dead, and two others have been injured, in a crash involving a caravan, truck and ute on the Bruce Hwy, north of Brisbane.

It is the second fatal crash on the highway in four days, after three people died when a bus and caravan collided head-on at Gumlu, south of Townsville, on Sunday.

Thursday’s fatal crash — which appears to have occurred after a tyre came loose from a caravan under tow — happened at Bauple, near Gympie, about 12.25pm, closing the highway in both directions.

Paramedics assessed a 59-year-old man, the sole occupant of the ute, for life-threatening injuries, Queensland Ambulance said.

But he was declared dead at the scene.

Two other people were taken to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition.

Police say the crash, believed to have been caused by a tyre having come loose from a caravan, was “horrific”.

“A wheel has fallen from a caravan which has caused an obstruction on the road. As a result, the other two vehicles have collided,” officer Matt Swan told 7NEWS.

“(It is a) pretty horrific crash.”

Motorists are urged to avoid the area, or expect long delays.
