Kristin, whose own child shared a ward with the baby, told 7NEWS she was shocked by the allegations — so too were individuals and businesses who raised tens of thousands of dollars to support the family earlier this year.
“She just looked really distressed and I had gone up to her and said, ‘Hey, are you OK? What’s going on?’ and I had a general conversation with her about what’s going on with her child, what’s going on with mine, and it just went on from there,” she said.
One follower, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told 7NEWS: “I, myself, have got kids ... so it kind of touched the heart a little there ... so that’s why we thought, we’ve got to get involved, we’ve got to help this family.”
A hospital spokesperson declined to comment on the child’s condition, citing the need for parental permission.
“In the interests of privacy and confidentiality, Children’s Health Queensland is unable to comment on an individual patient’s medical history without permission from a patient’s family,” she said.
