Police have confirmed their worst fears about a man who allegedly threw coffee on a small child in Brisbane, saying he is a foreign national who has since left the country.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said officer had issued an arrest warrant for the man after he allegedly threw hot coffee on a nine-month-old baby boy who was with his family at Hanlon Park.

“Through extensive investigations, detectives from Morningside child protection investigation unit have identified the man believed to be involved, a 33-year-old foreign national,” the spokesperson said.

The man has since left the county and Queensland Police are working with national and international partner agencies to progress this investigation further.”

The young boy was taken to hospital with serious burns after the incident but has since been released to recover at home with his family.

The family said the little boy had been incredibly resilient despite the “traumatic and difficult” time.

“He’s up and about, walking and causing chaos,” his mother said.

“He is such a strong little boy and we are so so proud of him.”

But the family is still seeking justice as the police investigation enters its third week.”This horrific event should have never happened,” the mother said.

“Hopefully one day justice will be served.”

Police previously described the incident as deliberate and unprovoked.

“It is callous and cowardly,” Detective Inspector Paul Dalton said.

“In 35 years of being a police officer, I’ve never come across a job where a child this young in these circumstances has been attacked.”
