Tinaroo Dam: Good samaritan missing after going to aid of kids on kayaks in Queensland dam

A major search and rescue mission is under way after a good samaritan disappeared while trying to help two children who had run into difficulty on kayaks in a Queensland dam.

Multiple police teams are scouring the water and surrounding areas after the man was reported missing in the Tinaroo Dam in Yungaburra on Sunday.

Emergency services were called just after 3.30pm following reports a 62-year-old man had failed to resurface after swimming out to assist the two children on kayaks.

The children made it safely to shore but the man was nowhere to be seen.

Police confirmed they had deployed assets to assist in the search, including police on foot, Cairns Water Police, QGAIR Rescue 510 helicopter, and QFD Swift Water Rescue crews.

The search continued until approximately 8pm on Sunday and reconvened at first light on Monday morning.
