Two residents are in a critical condition after firefighters pulled them from a burning unit during a dramatic early-morning emergency west of Brisbane.

Emergency crews were called to Melville Drive at Brassall about 4.15am on Tuesday following reports a unit was fully alight.

Firefighters arrived to find a man and woman in their 60s unaccounted for inside the home.

The pair were located and rescued shortly before 4.45am, before being rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

New details revealed on Sunrise this morning indicate the blaze is believed to have started in the garage as the couple attempted to escape.

During the ordeal, the woman, who has mobility issues, fell over while trying to get out.

Her husband stayed with her and called for help until firefighters arrived and pulled them both from the home.

The unit was extensively damaged before crews brought the fire under control just before 5am, with firefighters remaining at the scene.

In a neighbouring unit, a woman and her three young children were caught up in the chaos after initially believing burglars were trying to break in before realising a fire had broken out next door.

They told Sunrise they managed to escape safely and were assessed by paramedics but declined hospital transport.

“We just heard a loud bang, like someone just hit the carriage and then they look outside and I see all this ambulance and fire trucks,” the woman said.

“It was scary but we were lucky it didn’t affect our side that bad. But yeah, we’re just happy that the kids are safe.”

Thankfully, the couple’s dog was seen running from the property unharmed after the rescue.

Fire investigators are now working to determine the cause of the blaze.
