A search and rescue operation is underway after a man fell into the Brisbane River and vanished.

The 23-year-old man was reportedly out with family and friends near the Jindalee boat ramp when he fell into the water just before 5.40am on Sunday.

Queensland Police Service Acting Inspector Shane Thow told the ABC that the man had been on a pontoon when he slipped.

The man is not a strong swimmer, Thow said.

Paramedics were called to Mount Ommaney Dr to support the search.

A man in his 20s was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with shoulder injuries, said Queensland Ambulance.

The Courier Mail reported he had been attempting to dive into the water while helping search for the missing man.

Thow said several people had tried to help.

“A couple of (the missing man’s) mates actually tried to help, but he slipped below the water before they got to him,” Thow said.

Foot patrols, water police, and swift water rescue teams have been deployed in the effort to locate the man.

His family members were also at the scene while rescue operations continued.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact police.
