The young man, who couldn’t swim, slipped from a pontoon into the water and failed to resurface, Sunrise reports.

Sunrise understands that nearby boaties could hear cries for help from the young man’s friends, and flocked to the scene to assist in the search.

Foot patrols, water police, and swift water rescue teams have since been deployed in the effort to locate the man.

“A couple of (the missing man’s) mates actually tried to help, but he slipped below the water before they got to him,” Queensland Police Service Acting Inspector Shane Thow said.

One man in his 20s, who dived into the water while searching for the missing man, injured his shoulder and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Queensland Ambulance said.

The missing man’s family members were also at the scene while rescue operations continued throughout Sunday.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact police.
