A 29-year-old man is fighting for his life after being struck by a ute south of Brisbane.

Police were called to Chambers Flat Road at the intersection with Bourke Street in Waterford West shortly after 8.15pm on Thursday to reports that a white Holden Colorado dual-cab had collided with a pedestrian.

The driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old Redland Bay man, initially fled but later returned to the scene and is now assisting police with inquiries.

The pedestrian, a 29-year-old Loganlea man, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

Police are appealing to anyone with information or relevant footage to contact the police.
