The one-month-old baby was in the back of his family's Jeep Cherokee, parked on the side of the M1, when a ute crashed into the back of the car.

A young mother has been left devastated after losing her five-week-old baby in a horrific car crash on the Gold Coast.

Divine Caneo, a 24-year-old woman from Ormeau Hills, had parked her silver Jeep Cherokee on the northbound side of the M1 near the Smith St ramp at Gaven when a grey Toyota Hilux smashed into her car about 2.50am on Sunday.

Her son Jack Riordan, who was strapped in his car seat in the Jeep, was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital. He tragically couldn’t be saved.

He had celebrated his one-month birthday just days earlier.

Caneo was also taken to hospital in a serious condition but has since recovered.

Footage from the scene showed both vehicles severely damaged, with debris scattered across the road.

The young mother later took to social media, posting heartbreaking tributes to her son.

“My angel, help mummy and daddy accept everything,” she wrote on Tuesday.

In another post, she said: “Fly high my little man. You will always be in our heart, my love.”

“Until we meet again little man, you’ll always be in my heart and I’ll make sure you will not be forgotten.”

Caneo often shared posts about being a new mother, including photos of Jack’s milestones — such as his first ride home, his first walk, and his birthday celebration with cupcakes shaped into a number one alongside the family dog.

She told The Courier Mail she had pulled over the night of the crash because Jack had been crying for food.

She and Jack had just left hospital, where her partner Callum Riordan — Jack’s father — had been unwell.

“The day the accident happened his dad felt really sick and had a fever,” she said.

“We were just alone in our house so there was no one else to take care of Jack so we went to the hospital to accompany his dad for his check up.”

However, after waiting for 45 minutes, they were told there would be more tests, so Riordan asked Caneo and Jack to go home.

“So we went back to my car and drove off but suddenly Jack cried out loud, and I was looking for a place to stop safely to feed him, because he was due for a feed,” she said.

She recalled feeding Jack in the parked car before tragedy struck.

“After I fed him, I put him back in his car seat and I went to the driver seat. After that, I can’t remember anything,” she said.

“I just woke up with a lot of people surrounding me.”

The driver of the Toyota, a 51-year-old man from Loganlea, sustained minor injuries.

Police said on Monday investigations were continuing, and it is not yet known whether charges will be laid.
