A road worker has died when he was hit by a truck while directing traffic on a Victorian highway.

The man was performing traffic control duties for road works on the Western Hwy at Nhill in Victoria’s west when he was hit by the truck about 6pm on Thursday.

He suffered life-threatening injuries and died at the scene.

He had not yet been formally identified, police said.

“The exact circumstances ... are yet to be determined at this stage,” they said.

“Anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have passed through the area with dashcam is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.”

The Western Hwy was closed, with drivers told to expect significant delays, but it has since reopened on Friday morning.

He was the 22nd life lost on Victorian roads so far this year.

WorkSafe Victoria has been contacted for comment.
