A war between rival youth gangs has exploded overnight with a mother and son stabbed in their home.

Two people have been charged with allegedly stabbing a mother and her teenage son during a home invasion in Adelaide’s northeast.

South Australia Police said the 53-year-old woman and 17-year-old boy were both taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following the alleged home invasion on Nelson Rd in Gulfview Heights about 3.45am on Wednesday.

A third young man was also allegedly assaulted as he chased the offenders out of the house and was taken to hospital with minor hand injuries.

On Wednesday afternoon, a 16-year-old Pennington boy was arrested and charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass and causing serious harm.

A 20-year-old Rosewater man was charged with the same offences on Thursday.

Both were refused police bail.

Earlier on Wednesday, Assistant Commissioner Scott Duval said the boy was stabbed first, and his mother was only attacked when she intervened.

He said detectives as part of Operation Meld were yet to determine if the attack is linked to rival youth gangs - however, SA Police later confirmed it is not believed to be a random incident.

The search continues for the three remaining suspects described by Duval as male with slim builds in their late teens to early twenties.

“They are believed to have left the scene in a dark-coloured sedan which may be a blue (Mitsubishi) Magna.”

One of the suspects is believed to have been injured during an altercation, and police are urging him to seek treatment.

Duval said police made nine recent arrests of alleged gang members for breach of bail, shoplifting and carrying weapons.

“It is our aim to continue to put considerable pressure on these gang members and their associates to disrupt their criminal activity,” he said.
