A man has been arrested after the body of a woman was found in an outer suburb of Melbourne, with police treating the death as “suspicious”.

Emergency services were called to a property on Reid Street in South Morang at around 10am on Monday.

When police arrived, the located the body of a woman and confirmed her deceased.

The woman has not yet been formally identified.

Homicide squad detectives remained at the scene through the morning and early afternoon.

Images from 7NEWS show a heavy police presence on the quiet suburban street.

“The death is being treated as suspicious,” a spokesperson said.

“The exact circumstances surrounding her death are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.”

A 33-year-old man from South Morang was arrested and will soon be interviewed by police.

He remains in custody.

Police believe the two parties are known to each other.
