Mikey was surfing an 8m wave in Tasmania before being knocked unconscious in the water. Here’s how he survived
Mikey Brennan is no stranger to the big waves of Shipstern Bluff or “Shippies”, off Tasmania’s southeast coastline, that can only be accessed by a 30km jet ski ride or a two-hour bush hike.
But disaster struck the experienced surfer on Friday, when he was wiped-out by an 8m wave and knocked unconscious in the ocean at the remote surfing hotspot.

Following the incident, he was rushed to Royal Hobart Hospital where he underwent a CT scan and was looked over by the trauma team before being discharged.
On Tuesday, Brennan joined Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington on Sunrise and shared his heart-stopping story.
“It was a pretty heavy situation. Went down with the boys, as usual, and yeah, went out and just had some fun … but got into a precarious situation. But yeah, all good, still here,” Brennan said.
“The wave (that knocked me unconscious) was probably one of the bigger waves I have ever caught. And just the amount of energy in the swell, the situation was just pretty intense. I went down and got knocked out.”
But Brennan, who lives in Hobart’s Sandy Bay, made light of the potentially deadly incident.
“I have been doing it (the sport) my whole life,” he said.
“I love the ocean. I guess, I don’t know, I’ve got like maybe nine lives or something. So, yeah, it’s all working out.”
In 2010, Brennan broke his back when he hit the reef while surfing at Tasmania’s Governor Island, located near the state’s Freycinet Peninsula, and recalled the incident on Sunrise.
“These are the things with nature. It’s unpredictable, you don’t know what’s going to happen. You really are not in control of the situation.
“I just remember copping it. I hit my head. Got a couple of little beauty scars. I got knocked out, so I can’t really remember, but I was lucky I had the boys there.”
As the chat wrapped up Barr asked what his family thought of his big wave surfing adventures.
“Dad didn’t want me to do it anymore. But that’s not going to stop me,” Brennan admitted.
