A man has died after plunging 20 metres from a cliff at a picturesque picnic spot north of Sydney.

Police were called to the Duckholes Trail in Terrey Hills around 12.30pm on Friday, following reports of a man falling from a cliff top into the water.

Located in Ku-ring-gai National Park, the trail is popular with hikers and BMX riders and is often frequented for picnics.

Emergency crews recovered the body of a man, believed to be in his 40s, from the water at the base of the cliff.

He is yet to be formally identified.

“A crime scene was established and an investigation commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
